7C Villa
6 Days and 5 Nights: Asakusa, Kawagoe, and Lake Kawaguchi
Welcome to LeCollecteur! Join us as we embark on a 6-day, 5-night journey through Asakusa, Kawagoe, and Lake Kawaguchi.
Day 1 - Tokyo Shibuya
Today, we arrive in Tokyo, primarily staying in Shibuya. Tomorrow, we will explore Asakusa, followed by a scenic drive to Kawagoe, and finally, we'll head to Lake Kawaguchi to enjoy the majestic views of Mount Fuji.
Upon arriving in Shibuya, a visit to the iconic Shibuya Crossing is a must. This bustling intersection truly serves as the heart of Shibuya, where the vibrant flow of people is both breathtaking and overwhelming. Just like Shinjuku, the shopping here is endless, with countless styles that are rarely found in Hong Kong. The street performances add to the charm, showcasing an impressive level of talent.
As we wander through the streets, we search for a local eatery and come across Yakiniku Takeda, where the enticing aroma of grilled meat wafts through the air. The simple yet delicious all-you-can-eat menu features a range of meats, including delightful wagyu. This cozy spot is a favorite among locals, filled with the enticing scent of barbecue.
Day 2 - Asakusa / Omotesando
On the second day, we take a train to our destination. I have a fondness for Japan's rail system, admiring its meticulous design that makes for a comfortable experience. Upon reaching Asakusa, we head straight to the iconic Kaminarimon Gate, established in 628 AD and dedicated to the “God of Wind and Thunder.”
Behind the gate lies Nakamise Street, renowned for its traditional eateries, including the famous Meirin-do, known for its delightful Ningyo-yaki (doll-shaped cakes). The freshly made cakes bring forth a nostalgic aroma, reminiscent of the Showa era.
Silver Flower Hall offers an array of fruit skewers and their famous strawberry daifuku. The artisan-crafted daifuku, including a version made with white strawberries, is exquisitely delicate—a must-try for strawberry lovers.
As we stroll, we arrive at the main hall of Senso-ji Temple, a historic location where many visitors come to pray. A simple 100-yen fortune slip attracts couples and students alike. Should one draw an unfavorable fortune, tying it to a designated rack is said to transform misfortune into good luck.
Throughout our walk, we notice many wearing traditional kimonos, pausing for photographers to capture their beauty. The surrounding park and five-story pagoda offer picturesque views, especially stunning in autumn with ginkgo trees adorned in gold—perfect for a romantic stroll.
After visiting the temple, we explore the nearby streets, discovering the delightful store Orangeel, with vibrant decor featuring fresh orange juice. Though the taste is a bit ordinary, the presentation is charming.
Following our nose, we find Narumi Taiyaki, where traditional techniques are still proudly employed, watching as chefs slowly prepare taiyaki in molds. The freshly baked treats are warm and comforting, each bite sweet yet balanced, filled with custard and vanilla seeds—truly a blissful indulgence in the chilly weather.
On the same street is the enchanting Sanrio Gift Gate, a treasure trove of character-themed merchandise. Here, even apples are adorned with Little Twin Stars! This paradise for fans of Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll, and My Melody brings pure joy, as the shop is sprinkled with limited-edition goodies.
After a day of exploration, it’s time to re-energize. We head to a highly regarded fried steak shop in Asakusa, popular among locals. Expect a half-hour wait, but it's undoubtedly worth it. The crispy yet thin batter is delightfully non-greasy, served with a choice of wasabi sauce, rock salt, or soy sauce. Placing the succulent steak onto a hot stone grill keeps the meat perfectly pink and seasoned just right. The sound of sizzling is truly a healing experience.
Next, we make our way to Omotesando, where we stumble upon Mr. Morimbo, a dog-walking expert—without a doubt, an "in-motion attraction" in the area. However, we cannot linger long, as we have plans to visit Chikawa Land, an adorable paradise brimming with character-filled merchandise.
Day 3 - Shinjuku / Kawagoe "Little Edo" / Shin-Fukucho
On the third day, bright and early, we head to the Nissan Rent-a-Car at Shinjuku West Exit. Though it's not a GTR, we collect our vehicle for the next few days. The entire process is smooth, with staff carefully checking the car and explaining the navigation system. Finally, we are ready to set off freely!
Today, our destination is Kawagoe—a charming town known as "Little Edo." The vintage architecture, reminiscent of the Edo period, greets us warmly.
Our first stop is the popular Kawagoe Cheese Cake shop, where the rich aroma of their cheesecakes fills the air. The slightly caramelized surface complements a rich, creamy interior—an indulgence that leaves a lasting impression.
Next, we discover Miffy Kitchen & Bakery, offering not only a variety of adorable merchandise but also freshly baked goods—each decorated with Miffy designs. Unable to resist, I purchase two Miffy bread treats.
Speaking of local ingredients, sweet potatoes reign supreme! COEDO HACHI serves roasted sweet potatoes in a clay oven, topped with a brûlée-like layer of caramelized sugar, while their limited edition sweet potato custard is a flavor sensation.
For lunch, we decide to try MARUYA's charcoal-grilled oyakodon. The cozy atmosphere invites diners to take their time, savoring every bite. The chicken, grilled to perfection, is accompanied by creamy eggs—each mouthful is pure bliss. We also order smoked duck breast over rice, whose sophisticated flavors elevate our meal.
Afterward, we explore the nostalgic Kashiwa Yokocho alley, filled with traditional candies. On the way, we stumble into a quaint wooden café, whose décor and soft music create a relaxing ambiance, inviting us to enjoy a cup of the owner’s meticulously brewed coffee—each drop is pure delight.
Kawagoe is truly a beautiful place—not only for its old buildings but also for the warmth of its local culture and friendly people, leaving a lasting impression.
As night falls, we ponder our dinner options and decide to venture off the beaten path into a residential area. We find a quaint eel restaurant, Tokugawa. Upon entering, we briefly wonder if we’ve wandered into someone’s home, but the owner quickly greets us and leads us to a cozy dining room.
With a simple menu showcasing grilled eel rice in various styles, we eagerly place our orders. As an appetizer, we try pickled daikon—a refreshing and sweet contrast, accompanied by a fluffy omelet that is perfectly seasoned.
When the main event arrives—a beautifully presented two-color eel rice bowl and a simple miso soup—it’s everything we hoped for. The subtle charred aroma and savory flavors are truly divine. Each bite offers a delightful surprise, and as we enjoy the dish with soy sauce or wasabi, we experience it in different ways.
As our meal draws to a close, we are presented with the final touches: a refreshing bowl of green tea accompanied by fresh fruit, all for the modest sum of 9,900 yen. The fine eel rice, the cozy ambiance, and the cheerful demeanor of the proprietor left us thoroughly satisfied with our dining experience.
Afterward, we traveled to the vicinity of Shin-Fukucho, where we indulged in some egg gumball machines and picked up a late-night snack from McDonald's, capping off a rich day filled with delight.
Day 4 - Musashino Museum / Fuji Mount / 7C Villa
On the fourth day, we rose early, departing from the Kawagoe Prince Hotel, conveniently equipped with complimentary parking, perfect for our self-driving adventure. Our next destination was the Kawagoe Musashino Museum, a stunning architectural masterpiece designed by Kengo Kuma. The design is so breathtaking that it left us nearly speechless—a structure reminiscent of a grand mountain, its multiple facets reflecting light in varying ways, creating an ever-changing facade.
At the museum, we encountered the immersive light exhibition dedicated to Monet. The entrance, thoughtfully designed, featured a whimsical back garden perfect for capturing memories through photographs, resembling scenes from famous paintings.
The light and shadow exhibition transformed Monet’s and other Impressionist works into vibrant animations. Guests were invited to relax on hammocks and bean bags, creating a wonderfully soothing and immersive experience.
We later visited the 'Hondana Theater' on the fourth floor, a venue reportedly featured in YOASOBI's performances. Surrounded by towering walls of books and an enchanting light show, the ambiance felt like stepping into a magical library. The aesthetic beauty of the architecture, the thoughtful design of the exhibitions, and the charm of the theater all come together to make the Kawagoe Musashino Museum a site not to be missed.
In a rush to continue our journey, we settled for a simple lunch of Miffy-branded bread purchased the previous day—it was surprisingly delightful.
Now, we embarked on our much-anticipated expedition to Mount Fuji. The advantage of self-driving is the opportunity to revel in the surrounding landscapes—bridges, tunnels, mountains, and rivers, all equally captivating.
After about two hours on the road, we were greeted with the majestic sight of Mount Fuji through the car window. Before heading to our accommodation, we made a spontaneous decision to visit Lake Chūzenji in hopes of witnessing a picturesque sunset. Although clouds crowned the peak of Fuji, seeing it for the first time was an awe-inspiring experience. We found ourselves entranced, snapping photos and gazing with wide eyes, losing track of time. In a moment of longing, we wished for the clouds to part, but leaning against the railing and observing the shifting scenery of mountains, clouds, and sky was a pure pleasure.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, the temperature dropped, prompting us to check in at our lodging. We knew there would be more adventures awaiting us the next day.
Having secured a reservation at the newly opened 7C Villa & Winery, we were welcomed with homemade herbal teas and chilled fruit wines, a thoughtful touch on a chilly day.
The villa, which opened in July 2024, offers just two types of rooms—Suite Rooms and Twins Rooms—each meticulously designed, housing around ten rooms in total. We opted for the more compact Twins Room.
Upon entering, we discovered two spacious beds flanking an open wardrobe, exuding a sense of contemporary elegance. The villa provided cozy outerwear from Uniqlo, with pajamas and casual garments ready for our stay. A comfortable three-seater sofa adorned the lobby, complemented by a semi-outdoor terrace and a private Japanese garden, complete with an outdoor bath filled with natural hot spring water from Mount Fuji.
The bathing area was spacious enough for two people to use simultaneously without complaint, furnished with high-quality bath products and Dyson hairdryers. The separate wet and dry areas of the bathroom, along with the ample space for the toilet and shower, were thoughtfully arranged. We were also provided with local herbal teas and equipment for hand-dripped coffee.
However, the highlight for me was the beautifully prepared casual wear, perfect for tonight’s dinner at the villa.
Our evening meal was an exquisite eight-course affair. With a light focus on the wines, we opted for the villa's own sparkling wine instead of pairing it with red or white.
The first course featured bread accompanied by roasted vegetables and grilled beef, while the soup was a delightful kombu and bonito broth. Each dish was crafted from fresh ingredients, delivering unique flavors.
Next came a vibrant local vegetable salad, elegantly garnished with sea urchin foam and matcha sauce—an artistic presentation.
Following this was a dish of fish grilled with rock salt, prepared on-site, highlighting the freshness of its ingredients.
The main courses included Wagyu beef braised in Koshu wine and pan-seared free-range chicken from local farms, served with various condiments. Both main dishes boasted rich flavors, the beef tender and perfectly cooked.
Accompanying the meal was a tea-infused rice, cleansing and enriching our palates after the hearty flavors.
For dessert, we indulged in persimmons paired with cream cheese, along with raisin cookies and a steaming cup of coffee, leaving us thoroughly satisfied.
Day 5 - Kawaguchi Asama Shrine / Wasabi Shokudo / Nikukawase Clock Store / Oishi Park
On day five, we rise with joy, soaking in the environment before relishing the breakfast arranged by the villa. I particularly appreciate the thoughtful presentation in bento style, allowing us to enjoy a simple yet fresh meal in such a beautiful setting.
After breakfast, we depart for Asama Shrine, as our villa lies conveniently close. We choose to walk, taking in the scenery of Lake Kawaguchi’s residences—Mount Fuji always by our side.
Upon reaching the shrine, we first visit the Fuji Viewing Point, ascending the left mountain path for around 20-30 minutes. Along the way, we discover a charming campsite; although it's labeled "Guests Only," everyone is friendly and inviting.
While driving is an option, the sights observed on foot are irreplaceable. Once we reach the viewing area, two torii gates await, along with a friendly attendant who collects an entrance fee of 200 yen. The stunning view of Mount Fuji from beneath the torii is simply breathtaking, rewarding our efforts despite the need to wait for the perfect shot.
After capturing our moments, we browse through souvenirs and sip coffee while admiring the scenery.
Descending, we visit the nearby Kawaguchi Asama Shrine, where the towering cedar trees make a profound impression. Established in 865 AD to calm the active Mount Fuji, this peaceful shrine invites contemplation, offering a serene escape for thoughts to settle.
Feeling hungry, we seek out a local delicacy at the nearby Wasabi Shokudo, known for its traditional wasabi dishes. The ambiance is rich with history, yet the staff are lively and bustling. Finally, our meal arrives, featuring a vegetable-rich broth—perfect for the cold winter day. The texture of the udon-like wasabi noodles is delightful, just what we needed.
After our meal, we return to the villa to prepare for our next adventure.
Next, we head to the Nikukawase Clock Store in Nakagawachi. Here, tourists are curious, eager to cross the streets and snap photos, sometimes risking their safety. Allow me to offer a few tips on street crossing etiquette!
If a vehicle approaches, always return to the sidewalk—it's essential for safety! As we make our way across the street at dusk, our carefulness rewards us with stunning views of Mount Fuji.
As night falls, we rush to our next destination—Oishi Park. Although we arrive after sunset, the garden's beauty is striking. We can’t tear our eyes away from Mount Fuji, a captivating sight until the park is cloaked in darkness.
You may not notice in the photos, but the temperature dips to just 1 degree, with gusty winds. Resorting to survival instincts, we find a nearby restaurant for warmth, indulging in tempura rice bowls and local beef sushi—both exquisite. The best part is the hot curry beef stew, which drives away the chill and comforts the soul. Returning to the villa for a relaxing soak in the hot spring is pure bliss!
Day 6 - 7C Villa / Fuji Lawson / Airport
On our final day, the skies remain clear and bright. We enjoy the last breakfast box provided by 7C Villa—simple yet full of fresh ingredients, including soup, fruits, pastries, and refreshing juices.
Today, we also sample 7C's red wine, delightfully smooth and flavorful. The local vegetable salad is fresh and unique, adding to our farewell breakfast.
Emboldened by the villa’s instructions, I even attempt to brew a cup of coffee myself, featuring delightful nutty notes!
As we relax while watching the last glimpses of the reverse Fuji on television, we prepare to depart the villa back to Tokyo.
En route, we encounter Fuji Lawson, and of course, stop to take a photo.
This journey has allowed us to witness the magnificent Mount Fuji—truly a rewarding experience.
